Sketches:
Shown below are some of my early exploration sketches of the style of my icon system in a series of thirty second sketches. We focuses on three of our referents to do so on what we thought the hardest referent to design would be, the easiest referent to design, and a referent we thought was somewhere inbetween. I chose to focus on denial (my in-between referent), anger (my easiest referent), and desperate for answers (my hardest referent).

Three Styles:
From there, students chose three different styles to get reviewed from our peers. Based on the feedback and personal opinions, we would then chose a style to expand on and create.

Final Style and Iterations:
The collection of images below shows some of my rapid iterations throughout the process.I chose to expand on my shadow drawings in the end. I wanted to focus on the duality of emotions you during a break-up. The internal and external emotions we show during a breakup are very versatile and different. I wanted to show this first hand in my symbol-set. I chose to make the character gender-neutral so anyone would be able to relate to the image.

Symbol System Grid:
The images below show the basic grid my symbol system follows.

Final Symbol Set and Application:
Below shows the final symbol system I put together for the article and an application of it. If you'd like to read Dr. Lachmann's article yourself, click the button below!
